| Combine a zest for living and a
love for the arts and you will discover Orcas Island artist
Pam Loew. Her vitality is a highly contagious and welcome
ingredient in this small island community.
Pam co-owns and manages Turtleback Press. Her calligraphic
training and sensitivity to the subtleties of design eventually
led her to invest in a completely different type of printing
system - a 1903 Pearl treadle-operated letterpress.
The
old clam shell press and all its letters, found a new
home in a remodeled pump house on Pam's farm. With its
new name, the Pump House Press, it became an official branch
of the larger Turtleback Press publishing company.
The desire for more beautiful print is ultimately what
led Pam into learning and mastering the whole art of
printing. The little pump house where she works has the
ambience of an artist’s dream - a sanctuary of solitude
with breathtaking views of islands scattered in the distance.
There, she can carefully lay out the tiny pieces of lead
type and sing to the sweet music of the treadle press as
it unleashes its unique beauty. |
